Newborn circumcision is a quick and safe procedure that removes the foreskin from a baby boy’s penis. It is usually performed within the first few weeks of life. At London Circumcision Centre, we specialise in baby circumcision using the Circumplast ring—a modern method known for fast healing, less discomfort, and a cleaner result.

All procedures are carried out by Dr. A. R Khan, a Consultant Paediatric Urologist with over 30 years of experience, and Dr. Safdar, an ex-Professor of Paediatric Surgery. Together, they have completed more than 5,000 newborn circumcisions across London and Cambridge.

If you are considering newborn circumcision in London, our clinic offers expert care, direct access to senior surgeons, and trusted support throughout the process.

Reasons for Newborn Circumcision

Parents choose baby circumcision for medical, religious, cultural, or personal reasons.

At London Circumcision Centre, we respect all reasons and ensure every procedure is guided by expert assessment and informed consent.

Common Reasons Include:

  • Medical Need: Conditions like phimosis (tight foreskin) or recurrent balanitis (infections) can make circumcision medically necessary—even in newborns.
  • Religious Practice: Circumcision is an important tradition in Islam and Judaism, usually performed within the first few days of birth.
  • Cultural Beliefs: In many communities, circumcision is a family or cultural norm passed down through generations.
  • Hygiene & Prevention: Studies suggest circumcision may lower the risk of certain infections and improve hygiene, especially in early years.

Our surgeons, Dr. A. R Khan and Dr. Safdar, ensure each case is individually assessed to confirm that circumcision is safe and appropriate.

Before Your Baby’s Circumcision

Before performing a newborn circumcision, every baby is carefully assessed by our experienced doctors — Dr. Khan (30+ years experience) or Dr. Safdar (former Professor of Paediatric Surgery). This ensures your child is healthy, suitable for the procedure, and that any medical concerns are identified in advance.

If a baby is not fit for circumcision due to medical reasons, we provide a formal referral to a Specialist Paediatric Urologist.

For children under 16, both parents must attend to give written consent. If one parent cannot be present, please contact us beforehand to discuss your situation.

Circumcision will not be performed without legal consent.

Circumcision Method

We use the Ring Method for baby circumcision, primarily the Circumplast device, which we have specialised in since 2013. It is our preferred choice over Plastibell due to its superior safety profile and outcomes.

The Circumplast ring is designed to:

  • Prevent migration to the shaft.
  • Protect the glans.
  • Leave less inner skin, resulting in a tidier, more natural appearance.

The ring is placed around the foreskin and tied securely. It stays in place to stop bleeding and naturally separates within 3 to 14 days. This method is quick, low-risk, and minimally invasive, making it highly suitable for newborns.

We also have experience with other methods, including Gomco clamp, Mogen clamp, Alisklamp, stitch and glue, but Circumplast remains the safest and most effective for babies.

Procedure

The circumcision procedure typically takes 10 to 15 minutes and is carried out by Dr. (Mr.) Khan or Dr. Safdar, both experienced paediatric surgeons.

We use local anaesthesia to numb the foreskin, ensuring the baby feels no pain. Most babies remain calm or asleep throughout. The Circumplast ring is applied, and the foreskin is removed. The ring stays in place to control bleeding and will fall off naturally within 3 to 14 days.

Parents receive full guidance during the visit, including what to expect immediately after the procedure and how to care for the baby at home.

Best Age for Newborn Circumcision

The best age for newborn circumcision is between 3 days and 8 weeks old. At this stage, babies heal faster, experience fewer complications, and the procedure is simpler.

Our audit shows the lowest complication rate in babies under 1 month. After 2 months, babies become more active, making healing slightly longer and increasing the risk of discomfort.

We recommend booking early to ensure the circumcision is done within this ideal window.

Aftercare

After circumcision, we provide 24/7 direct support from our doctors—Dr. Khan or Dr. Safdar—for peace of mind. Each family receives a free aftercare kit, including medicated honey and full instructions.

Healing Process:

  • Mild swelling is normal and settles in a few days.
  • The ring falls off naturally within 3 to 14 days (average 7 days).
  • The penis remains exposed and should be kept clean.

Daily Care Tips:

  • Bathe daily with 1–2 tablespoons of salt in warm water.
  • Gently clean with water if soiled.
  • Apply Vaseline with each nappy change to prevent sticking.
  • Use Paracetamol for the first 48 hours. Ibuprofen is suitable for babies over 3 months.

Free follow-up support is available during the first 4 weeks, including appointments if needed.

Risks of Newborn Circumcision

Circumcision is a safe and quick procedure when performed by experienced surgeons. However, like all surgical procedures, it carries some risks:

  • Bleeding – Usually minor and easily controlled.
  • Infection – Rare and typically managed with antibiotics.
  • Too much or too little skin removed – Uncommon but may require revision.
  • Ring-related issues – The ring may delay falling off or migrate if not monitored. Parents should follow aftercare instructions carefully.
  • Buried penis – More common in babies with excess fat around the penis; may need additional care or correction later.

Please get in touch with us immediately if you have a problem.

  • Temperature greater than 37C
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Extreme irritability/inconsolability
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Signs of infection
