What Does a Male Child Circumcision Involve?

Circumcision (ring method) involves removing the extra fold of skin that normally covers the head of the penis using a plastic ring. After the procedure, the tip of the penis is always exposed. We use the Circumplast circumcision device, which has the advantage of preventing proximal migration of the ring. It also protects the glans and leaves less inner skin, giving a neat, tight circumcision look.

Assessment of Baby or Boy

Each child must undergo an assessment and consultation prior to the operation. If any problems or contraindications for circumcision are identified, a referral to a Specialist Paediatric Urologist is advised.

Indication

Parents may choose circumcision for their son for religious, social, or cultural reasons. In some cases, it may be recommended for medical reasons, such as Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans (BXO) affecting the foreskin.

Procedure

We perform circumcision on male children using a local anaesthetic to ensure safe and effective pain-relief. We employ the Circumplast or Plastibell technique (a ring method), where a plastic ring is tied around the end of the penis at the foreskin.

Infant or Boy Circumcision Device

The top of the foreskin is removed, and the ring stays on to prevent bleeding after surgery. The procedure typically takes 10-15 minutes.

Additional Information

  • We have experience with various circumcision methods, including stich and glue circumcision, Gomco clamp circumcision, Alisklamp circumcision (Turkish Clamp), and Plastibell circumcision.
  • The Circumplast device is of Australian origin and has been found to be effective in preventing proximal migration of the ring, a potential issue reported with the Plastibell device in some cases.
  • The Circumplast device also helps protect the glans and results in less inner skin remaining, giving a neater appearance.
  • Each child is assessed individually to ensure circumcision is appropriate and safe.
  • Parents should be aware that circumcision is a personal choice and should be made after careful consideration and consultation with a medical professional.
